Pit Bulls: the Only Dogs with Publicists

Only one breed of dog requires the kind of professional help that normally is reserved for Hollywood movie stars who are caught with underage squeezes, vast quantities of schedule one drugs, or on video beating their spouses. I am referring to publicists, and the breed that needs them is, of course, the pit bull — the dog that Americans justifiably fear the most.
Look at the headlines today:
  • Pit bull attack leaves six people injured, pet dog dead in Bremerton – KOMO News
  • North Carolina: Man killed by pack of dogs; woman charged with murder – WYFF 4
  • Davidson County deputies arrest woman, weeks after dogs killed 73-year-old man – WXII
Note that these headlines are from KOMO News, WYFF 4, and WXII. These are news reports. The articles are about things that pit bulls do.
Now look at the press releases:
  • Pit Bull Watching Over Sanctuary Cats Is the Sweetest Guardian – Yahoo
  • Pit Bull’s Fancy Prosthetic Boots Have Her Back Legs Ready for the Runway – Yahoo
The first article is based on a photograph of a pit bull staring coldly at cats. I wonder what it’s thinking. The second imagines a pit bull with a body that is comparable to a fashion model. I wonder what the publicist was thinking. Or smoking.
Notice that these glowing articles about adorable pit bulls were published through Yahoo. Not news channels. These are press releases, not news reports. The news tells us about how pit bulls violently, painfully, horribly maul innocent people to death. The publicists describe the breed in a completely opposite way, frequently complaining that the only problem with the dog is that it is misunderstood.
Misunderstood. Not appreciated. Not glorified sufficiently.
Poor misunderstood pities! Victims of prejudice and discrimination, no doubt. Shameful, unconstitutional. Words in the news are violence, so we are forcing them to defend themselves. Deep down, they don’t want to kill people. When they kill people, the murders are mostly peaceful protests.
At least, that’s what the pit bull public relations people are selling. Do you buy it?
